Donald,

Can Mbox files be opened and sorted by groups somehow, or just extract
group 1 files, then group 2, and so on?
With Thunderbird I'm sure I could filter or sort them by the To: address or the group subject tag. And then copy or move them into other folders group by group.

With other mbox readers that might depend on its capabilities; but I think it is likely that any full email client application (OE, Forte, and others) could do this as well.

Gerald,

... it would be nice if there were a group specific option to do the
export. As an alternate solution, the messages could be split out by
group in the full account download.
I agree with both solutions.

The first because I was surprised that the button directly launched the export -- I was expecting to see at least a confirmation page, but a page with checkboxes to select the primary group(s) and subgroup(s) would be even better.

I suspect that others may have been surprised as well, leading to more exports than were actually intended and downloaded.

When I keep messages in my email I do so in separate folders for each group. So I would want them separated that way even when exporting more than a single group at a time.

moderated Site updates #changelog

Changes to the site this week:

  • SYSADMIN: Upgraded the mail email sending machine.
  • BUGFIX: When parsing an emoji (":emojiname:") that doesn't exist, the trailing colon would disappear.
  • NEW: Timestamps are included in activity log exports.
  • NEW: You can export all of your account data.
  • BUGFIX: HTML special characters in calendar descriptions were not properly escaped in generated ICS files.
  • NEW: You can export the activity log now as part of the export group process, and exports are now logged.
  • INTERNAL: Increased nsqd message size limits for large export group archives.

Have a good weekend everybody.

I suspect you're not getting much "love" for this because the Facebook integration isn't used all that much. But if I understand correctly, all it does is repost things from Facebook to the group as a new message.

It's also my understanding that all embedded images are rescaled to 640px in the long dimension. Image attachments can be rescaled using group settings (Admin->Settings->Max Size in Email).

What you're showing looks like it was cropped, not rescaled. Does the image continue to the right (and down) but you couldn't include it all in one screenshot? I also don't know what you mean by "images posted to or from a link."

Anyway, I suggest you check the same message online and report back what you find. If it's still too big, try playing with the existing photo settings and see if that remedies your problem. I personally have my group set up so all photos are rescaled to 1024px. This should be more than adequate for viewing online...or in email.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

P.S. Those who have a real need to share print-quality images can always upload their files to cloud storage and post a link instead.

Please send this report to support@groups.io. The beta@ group is for discussing upcoming features.

I had to change my preferences to see 100 responses per page to get the email to go out correctly. While I can use that workaround, it's not going to be clear to my moderators or members that they will have to make the same adjustment. They just want to be served.

Is it possible to change the images size on the Facebook integration?

As it is now, I often find that images posted or from a link are huge. Example: this morning someone from my local astronomy club posted a link to an article on our group's facebook page. The article featured a photo of a young woman. When I opened the email from our group via the integration, all I could see was her eye because the image is so large (see attached image)!

Also because the image is so large and the font so small, the text posted is almost invisible.

Is it just me or does the Facebook integration need smaller images and a bigger font for text?

These could be set as group level defaults (notification box is automatically checked or not checked), with the user having the option to override when the upload occurs.

Chris,

A Notification about a File upload is available as an option to whoever uploads the file; I don't think there is a Moderator - level option to force a notification, though.

Exactly. Example: Files are uploaded by whoever, but unless the notification is checked no one gets the message. That´s not always problem-free.

There appears to be no corresponding option available for notification of Photo uploads.

Photo uploading without notification can be even more inconvenient.

If you are suggesting a Owner / Moderator settable "forced" notification than I think I would probably agree with you.

Yes, that´s what I mean.

moderated User and group export updates

Hi All,

For user exports, we now export user and subscription data, in user.json and subscriptions.json, respectively. We also now export any profile photos we have of you.

For group exports, we now export group data, in group.json. We also export the cover photo, if there is one. Also, activity log lines are now time stamped.

Please let me know if you see anything astray.

Thanks,
Mark

Exporting for Closed Accounts Many of the groups I belong to here are from accounts migrated from Yahoo. As part of my migration, I also took the opportunity to rid myself of Yahoo email addresses and ended up combining my groups into one non-Yahoo email address account. The result of this is that a lot of my migrated content is no longer associated with my account.

I can determine the posterid numbers for posts that were made on Yahoo. It seems that the posterid is the same across all groups. Is there a way that I could also export data based on posterid? I am not sure if / how that could happen. Perhaps the issue really is whether or not I can reclaim an account that I closed and combine it into my current account.

Hmmm. I had not considered this. Currently when two accounts are merged, the 'old' user record is deleted from the database, but all references to that user are kept in the system (which is fine, it's designed to handle references to non-existent user records). I will need to set up some sort of aliasing system.

Take a look at their documentation on importing, or exporting contacts.
It is even more obtuse, and inadequately documented.

Though trivial to do once you figure out where to create a folder to copy the mbox file(s) into.
Install and use the _Import Export Extension_.

 Arno,

Download works well. Extraction of messages ends up as .mbox. I know it is a UNIX type but have to find out how to open it to see indivdual messages.

You want to import it into a mail reading program like Thunderbird, but I'm not sure which application would be easiest to use.

As much as I like Thunderbird in other respects, Thunderbird's developers seem to think that importing mbox files ought to be as obscurely documented as practical. Though trivial to do once you figure out where to create a folder to copy the mbox file(s) into. Hint: the Import command is the wrong first step: it doesn't include mbox files as a supported file type.

Scott,

the notification feature which you find in your supscription is optional. You have various norifications with little squares in front of them:

----

Notifications

Email when there are messages needing approval.

Email when there are members needing approval.

Email when a member joins/leaves this group.

Email when group storage limits are reached.

Email when someone creates or deletes a subgroup.

Email when someone reports a message.

Email when someone uploads a photo

Email when someone uploads a file/database

----

So if you don´t check them no notification goes out.

No this would be bad because in some groups there are more files and photos than messages.

What about when someone uploads a new album with one hundred photos ? You definitely do not
want one hundred notification messages.

I would not object to messages for files and photos if the group owner could have the option to turn them off.

Chris,
well, all I am asking for is a
notification. It could easily be added here:---
Notifications Email when
there are messages needing approval. Email when
there are members needing approval. Email when
a member joins/leaves this group. Email when
group storage limits are reached. Email when
someone creates or deletes a subgroup. Email when
someone reports a message.
 o   Email when a file is uploaded.o
Email when
a photo is uploaded.
Each moderator can decide
if he/she wants to check it or not.Victoria
