moderated Feature Request: Force Photo Downloads #suggestion

Bruce Bowman

When someone is viewing a photo and clicks the "download" button, the window generally refreshes and the photo displays again, requiring them to right-click on the photo once more to actually download it. It would be nice if the download could be forced on the server side so the button performs as expected.

We've had similar complaints about the CSV files for the member list and databases, but this strikes me as a more pernicious problem inasmuch as our subscribers have to deal with it, too.

Thanks,
Bruce

There is a large "notification overhaul" planned and photos will be included in that.

moderated customize "new file uploaded"

I'm  not sure whether this is already in the planned notification overhaul, but FWIW: In the cases where I upload a file that I want to announce to the group, the result of clicking "notify members" is very generic. I almost always have to add a subsequent message explaining what the file is and, if it's an update to an already existing file, what the change was. In most cases this does not really get members' attention because the title of the file is not contained in the message title.

It would be helpful if the notification included (a) the name of the file in the message title itself (not just in a line within the notification body) and (b) a customizable announcement, separate from the "file description", about the addition and its significance.

Yahoo and Groups.io could send an email out when a file had been uploaded if the uploader had ticked the box to notify members, but uploaded photos never got mentioned. Only in Updates could this activity be seen.

Is it possible to have a similar feature introduced to Groups.io please?

 Margaret,

There is this option when uploading files. Like Yahoo, there is also place to enter a short description that also goes along with the notification. I don't know why it was chosen to not do this for photos.

Doing a search on "photo notify" found discussions here in the past, but I wasn't able to find anything specific as to how the determination was made.

For those who require a calendar handout for meetings, can we get a Print button on the calendar page?

At the moment, if you try to print the calendar, you get all the info on the event/id.

Definitely a good suggestion.

Does it? (Methinks you may have missed the 'only') The ability for a group owner to change a member's display name certainly exists (via Admin > Members), AIUI this is always there, without setting an option: the question/topic is over an option that the member may not, so only owners can. (But there have been a lot of distracting comments over what should be in a display name)

If you think the option does exist, could you point us at it, please, as I can't find it.

moderated "Hold" on Membership Applications #suggestion

Chris Jones

There are occasions where it is necessary to seek "further and better particulars" about a specific application, but there does not appear to be any way of "holding" an application so that other moderators cannot accidentally award membership. (If there is then I haven't found it yet!)

Could "Hold" be added to the drop - down list of "Actions"? "Hold" would have to inhibit accepting members by email until the Hold was removed. This would flag up to other moderators that "something is going on".

I am not suggesting that only the moderator who put a hold on should be able to release it; that should be available to all moderators.

Chris

Hi All,

Thanks for the bug reports. I think I've fixed them all except for the icons in the HTML editor. Working on that now.

I had to switch things a bit; instead of a flashing question mark, if there's a problem with the icon, it'll just be a box. Please let me know if you see any of these.

Thanks,
Mark

        Hello Mark,
You said that you added a bunch of eye cons. Are these text labeled so that us totally blind list owners and those who are on the lists will know
what they are when we come across them?

Hi All,

As part of another project, I upgraded the icon package that the website uses to the latest version (Font Awesome 4 to 5). As part of that upgrade, they made a bunch of incompatible changes. I think I got them all, but please let me know if you see any icons that consist of a segmented circle with a flashing question mark in the middle. That would indicate one that I missed.

Thanks,
Mark

This capability already exists, as Barbara noted.

And I would say that it is down to each group owner to decide whether he has any standard for them, in including (or excluding) real (or fake) names, and whether he requires to know the real names (or any other details) of members. And that it is his privilege to do so, for his group. As it is my right to not provide them, and not be a member of his group.
That's kinda of the point...if we can already change them anyway, the ability to "lock in" those changes isn't really taking away any "subscriber rights" (whatever that means).

Over an over again, in GMF and elsewhere, I hear group owners assert that the owner sets the rules and subscribers should be expected to abide by them. I can't fathom why this particular example would be an exception.

and what you are really in need of is a structure for messages.
For the described use case, I think you are correct.

However, I can see one use-case, for which sub-groups of a sub-group of
the main group might be useful:

Describing via example:

* Software Development Company list

** Software Program # 1 list

*** Support for Software Program # 1 list;
*** Development of Software Program # 1 list;
*** GitHub generated junk for and about Software Program # 1 list;

** Software Program # 2 list

*** Support for Software Program # 2 list;
*** Development of Software Program # 2 list;
*** GitHub generated junk for and about Software Program # 2 list;

** Software Program # 3 list

*** Support for Software Program # 3 list;
*** Development of Software Program # 3 list;
*** GitHub generated junk for and about Software Program # 3 list;

A second example:

* Educational Institution list;

** Biology Department list;

*** Biology 156 list;
*** Biology 157 list;
*** Biology 158 list;

** Math Department list;

*** Math 099 list;
*** Math 101 list;
*** Math 102 list;
*** Math 103 list;

** English Department list;

*** English 104 list;

**** English 104 Section 1 list;
**** English 104 Section 2 list;
**** English 104 Section 3 list;
**** English 104 Section 4 list;

*** English 103 list;

**** English 103 Section 1 list;
**** English 103 Section 2 list;
**** English 103 Section 3 list;
**** English 103 Section 4 list;

*** English 102 list;

**** English 102 Section 1 list;
**** English 102 Section 2 list;
**** English 102 Section 3 list;
**** English 102 Section 4 list;

*** English 101 list;

**** English 101 Section 1 list;
**** English 101 Section 2 list;
**** English 101 Section 3 list;
**** English 101 Section 4 list;

*** English 099 list;

**** English 099 Section 1 list;
**** English 099 Section 2 list;
**** English 099 Section 3 list;
**** English 099 Section 4 list;

*** English 098 list;

**** English 098 Section 1 list;
**** English 098 Section 2 list;
**** English 098 Section 3 list;
**** English 098 Section 4 list;

*** English 097 list;

**** English 097 Section 1 list;
**** English 097 Section 2 list;
**** English 097 Section 3 list;
**** English 097 Section 4 list;

*** English 096 list;

**** English 096 Section 1 list;
**** English 096 Section 2 list;
**** English 096 Section 3 list;
**** English 096 Section 4 list;

However, I don't see it being cost-effective for Mark to set this
functionality up, until an organization specifically requests it.
It makes for a useful Enterprise level feature.It would also require
more than a TB of storage space, if messages were archived --- something
that probably would be legally required.
