I cannot find a way of copying the export display into either Google Sheets or Excel on Android. Would a download of a .csv file be the solution?

Whoops.

I wrote:

Fooled me. It tracks you current preference (as the side Messages button does). So it effectively copies your current choice as you move from group to group.

I tend to keep multiple tabs open, so I hadn't noticed that behavior. Each tab keeps its own choice, thank goodness.

Bruce,

-- As a cookie that would be reset with each selection from the message display pull-down menu (and lost if you delete your browser cookies).

I believe that's what is implemented now. The selection is sticky per-group and per-browser.

Works fine for me, but I seldom go to a group through the Groups.io home page. Usually I use the Your Groups droplist and that doesn't reset the choice. Nor do I delete cookies regularly.

Hi Bruce,
Thanks for asking.  Here are my thoughts.

Best -- As a subscription preference, so a member could have a different preference from group to group.

Good -- As a member preference...this would apply to all groups the member has joined.

Maybe -- Cookies, I'm not sure cookies would be a good solution if you use various devices and operating systems.  But would let ask the developers if this would work across platform and consider the level of effort.

Others may have a different opinion and the development effort to implement the options may determine which one is justified.

Agree with this suggestion. I’ve been wanting it for years.

Toby,

Suggest that the button generate a file with a .csv extension and send that with the headers as a download so that users get a file they can open in a spreadsheet program easily.

I prefer it as it is. Usually I copy/paste it into Excel
o In the browser window select all then copy (Ctrl+A, Ctrl+C)
o In the Excel window paste (Ctrl+V)

Being forced to download and open a .csv file seems like more steps to me. If I want to save the .csv file instead of copy/paste it is simple to use the browser's Save As command to write the window to a file.

This has been discussed in older threads but the current Export button just displays the data in CSV format in the browser.

Thanks

PS - checked trello and did not see an item related to this.

In Y!G, I found myself resigned to dealing with all kinds of CSS and other markup stuff in quoted text. Now that was REALLY annoying. Not seeing that in GIO. I'm not sure what Mark has done to eliminate that, but it's really appreciated on my end.

moderated order of sending welcome message and group guidelines #suggestion

There seem to be some anomalies between the relative chronologies of member confirmation, sending of the Welcome Notice, and sending of the Group Guidelines (if set to be sent on join).

I have already emailed Mark at support about a frequent situation wherein group moderators are not informed of an application for membership in a restricted group until AFTER the requesting member has confirmed. (Person requests membership, receives confirmation email but not Pending Subscription notice, moderators are not informed. Only AFTER the person confirms is the Pending Subscription notice sent out and the group mods informed that there is a pending member request.) I am now writing to suggest that the Group Guidelines not be sent until after a member is confirmed - which essentially seems to be the opposite situation. Here is what happens, or happened:

Person requests membership, receives Pending Subscription Notice, returns the questionnaire within the notice, and has their membership approved.
Person is still unconfirmed, BUT is showing in their email delivery history that they received the Group Guidelines.

Since we are a premium group, we were able to confirm the member without the process of re-sending the confirmation email. However, this chronology says to me that the person received the Guidelines before they were confirmed. And that, in turn, implies (as I understand it) that they received the Guidelines before receiving the Welcome Notice. This is not good. I want to suggest that the Guidelines not be sent until the person is a bona fide member of the group and has received the Welcome notice.

More generally, I think that the process, the events in it and their relative chronologies, needs to be analyzed and possibly revamped overall.

In most browsers you can jump to the top of the page by pressing the "Home" key
while holding down the "Ctrl" key.

For keyboard users, the Home button should jump the page to the top.

I used to fret over each email recapitulating the thread from the beginning of time, but with storage measured in yottabytes and multi-gigabit networks, I don't get so worked up about it anymore. The groups.io compromise concentrates on usability rather resource conservation, which is practical for 2018.

There is also a button on the bottom right corner to return to the Top of the page.

I usually read online, so use the browser Back button to return to the Topic list.

I don't see this problem as I leave my Topic sort order with the newest on the top. I only go down as far as the last messages I haven't already read and read my way back to the newest at the top, which conveniently, is where the back to Topics button is.

Firefox doesn't like that link but you just pointed out the difficulty with arbitrarily deleting particular length..
