Changes to the site the past few weeks:

  • SYSADMIN: Upgraded and rebooted all instances with new kernel patched to fix the Meltdown bug.
  • SECURITY: Fixed issue where an attacker could create an account with someone else's email address (assuming it didn't exist) and get it confirmed.
  • BUGFIX: Very long text attachments could cause the search indexer to ignore some messages during indexing.
  • BUGFIX: When editing a markdown formatted message, the markdown formatting was not preserved.
  • BUGFIX: In the activity log, the wrong person was displayed for banned/unbanned/removed records.
  • SECURITY: Added X-Frame-Options HTTP header to prevent clickjacking.
  • BUGFIX: Some bounces to enterprise groups were not being processed correctly.
  • CHANGE: Removed List-Post headers from emails because of Thunderbird.
  • INTERNAL: Upgrade pgx package to fix Postgres replication timeout bug.

Have a good weekend everybody.

Your architecture of separated and simple db instances and more processing in the application layer may have been prescient— that may limit the situations where the context switches and pre-execution  munge performance for PostGres. Not sure of implications for Redis. I see that AWS says the performance hits have not been bad. I’ll quit prattling. Best, Marv Waschke

I also think there to be a downtime period some time next week. I will post more details when I know more.

Is there a place to set the entire group to default to EST
I set my individual login to EST
It would be easier to set it for everyone rather than have to change 200 + logins

I've seen various numbers, and it apparently depends on the workload. I'm not worried about most of the instances that run the service. But I am concerned about the main Postgres instance and the Redis instance. Unfortunately, it's not something I can really test ahead of time. And it's not like I can not patch the instances. So, fingers crossed, and also hopefully I'll be able to do the upgrades over the weekend, when there's less traffic, in case there's a problem.

Thanks,
Mark

Hi All,

As I mentioned, I thought there would have to be some downtime soon to patch a couple of security flaws. Perhaps you've seen the coverage of the Meltdown and Spectre flaws in the news. Anyways, I still don't have a timeframe yet as to when it will happen. If I had to guess, it'll be some time this weekend, but I'm still waiting on Linode to give us answers. There is also a possibility that there might have to be two downtime periods. I just don't know yet. Hopefully, the downtime will be limited to at most an hour. I will post more when I know.

I am still working through the backlog of group transfers, but should be caught up tomorrow. Support email should also be caught up after tomorrow. And then I will get to the beta@ messages.

Thanks, Mark

Great suggestion. Shouldn't be hard to implement. It should be added to the list of administrator notifications. Maybe it should be available to members as well.

Among all the notifications for Administrators, it would be nice to add a chance to get notified when someone edits a Wiki page.

In a group that wants to allow members to edit the Wiki, it would make it much easier for moderators to "stay on top" of any changes that were made, in case of any malicious or disastrous edits.

I'm betting that's already included in the planned "notification overhaul."

moderated Re: Gmail attachment links #suggestion

Thanks, Dave. I assume that the '0' at the end of the link is actually the "file index" in the attachments for the message. So, if a message had three files attached, the links would be for '0', '1', and '2'. But that's an educated guess.

I'm not sure I'd classify it as a 'bug' as such, but it certainly falls within the realm of "design deficiency." :-)

Whether the attachments come as an attachment to the email or a link is
set by the group's preferences together with your own personal
preferences - it is possible to select one or the other. Nothing to do
with GMail or any other email program.

I have my preferences to receive attachments as links and that is what
I get. But I agree, the link to the attachment does not have the actual
filename in it and is always set to '0'. I see this as a bug.

So, the problem is that the file NAME is not being used in the
"attachment link" in messages to Gmail, instead the attachment 'index'
is being used as the name.

I tried searching for posts about this issue but couldn't find any, and
I tried search settings to see if there was a setting about this but
didn't find that either.

Any ideas? Anyway to get a "real filename" included in the link for
emails going to Gmail? Or is this NOT a Gmail/Groups.io issues, but
something else instead?
