I think members can limit file attachment sizes on their preferences
page. I don't know if I'm interpreting this right.

I'm not sure what effect, if any, it would have on the site messages (probably none), but you can limit the size of the attachments that are sent to members email. Go to the group Settings, select the Default Sub Settings tab, and scroll down to Max Attachment Size. Anything over that size would include a link for members instead of the full attachment. I'd be tempted to try the '0 (no attachments)' setting so that all attachments should be sent as links, but not sure about that. Otherwise, setting it to 100KB would be my second choice.

Yeah, Mark has given us what seems like too many options in some cases! ;>) I love it!

moderated BUG? Calendar 'time' when doing ONLY an INVITE

Okay, here's another calendar thing (I've been testing this morning :-).

Set an event. If you add a REMINDER or if you SEND NOTICE TO GROUP WHEN EVENT HAPPENS, the email that gets posted will have the time of the event in your local time zone, but if you check SEND INVITE TO GROUP the time in the invite message is in GMT time, not the local time (at least, that happens when NO reminder is set and "send when event happens" is NOT checked).

An example of a non-invite reminder/notice:
When: Thursday, 9 November 2017
7:50am to 8:50am
(GMT-08:00) America/Los Angeles

An example of a non-reminder, non-notice, invite:
When: Thursday, 9 November 2017
4:10pm to 5:10pm
(GMT+00:00) UTC

Ah. Thanks, Duane, that would do it. What fooled me was that that option doesn't show up until you click UPDATE, which I hadn't done because it felt like I would be changing ALL of the repeating events. Kind of a tricky UI. :-( Works well when you know how it's GOING to work, but not intuitive the first time.

What I do is modify the 'offending event', then select "Only This Event" after clicking Update Event. Seems to be the quickest way to handle it. Should leave the others as they were created.

moderated REQUEST: the ability to SKIP an instance of a repeating calendar event

Our club has a monthly meeting, the first Monday of every month. We can set up a repeating monthly reminder for this just fine. The problem is that occasionally the first Monday of the month falls on a MAJOR holiday (such as 4th of July, Labor Day, Christmas, New Year's, etc), in which case we usually push that meeting back to the second Monday. So, it would be VERY nice to have the ability to easily SKIP (via a manual tweak, checkbox, whatever) a single instance of a repeating calendar event, without having to destroy the entire event, set up a one-time event, then recreate the repeating event starting the following month. That way, we could skip the first-Monday event, then just set up a one-time reminder for the second Monday.

Possible?

(I suppose an alternative method would be to provide a one-time-reschedule functionality, but the skip seems simpler for you to implement.)

Can the database column settings be made sticky? Currently if you have hidden any columns on a db page you have to re-hide them every time you navigate to the Next db page.

This is fixed now.

They are announced on this group, and they are also announced on the Twitter @groupsio account. On the day of, there's also a banner that goes up on the website announcing it.

NO NO NO NO NO!  This is one of the reasons I switched from Y!Groups.  When event notices/reminders are sent out that require an RSVP I want them to either use the directions specified in the notice or to hit the RSVP link, if provided.

One way to prevent responses to calendar reminders is to edit the #cal-reminder hashtag, which all reminders are tagged with. Check the 'Locked' option, and no one will be able to reply.

Hope this helps.

Great idea. How about an update a few times per year (minimum 3).

Frances,

Post the updates there too? Easy to do.

Weekly emails to that many users might be too much. Especially when so
much of it is at the detail level or invisible to users.

But having the #changelog postings in the Updates archive where they'll
be found bo those who look there could make sense. Mark could do this by
posting to both beta and updates, but have the #changelog hashtag in
updates carry the NoEmail option.

That said, it would also be good to remember periodically (Quarterly?
Semi-annual?) to post an overview that highlights the more significant
updates.

Yahoo consistently culls accounts that have no sending activity on a consistently inconsistent time schedule.
We ended up  with a almost 1000 hard bounces in our Yahoo  group.

Hi All,

FYI, Yahoo is rejecting a higher than normal number of emails from us, from all of their various domains. It's not a large percentage of all email to Yahoo, but it is higher than normal. The only thing I can think of is they are culling inactive accounts.

I think the reason why the updates group isn't very active is because Mark is constantly making so many changes to the site. Many of these changes are quite small, but a number of large changes are still made.

I checked the updates group and saw that the last update was January 20. Often when I am considering whether or not to use a product, I check their blog/updates section to see if the development is still ongoing. So, I suspect that at least a few people might have decided not to use Groups.io for this reason.

So I'm just suggesting that you consider posting there at least once every few months so that people know the site is still being updated.

Subject: [beta] Feature Request: Apply updated custom invitation text when resending invitations

When we first got started, we imported a list of subscribers from our old list, and sent a batch of invitations out to them. About half have responded and subscribed to our new groups.io list.

We wanted to resend the invitations to those who have not yet accepted the original invitation. In that process, we updated the custom part of the invitation with a more current message. But, we found that the 'resend invitation' function does not appear to pick up the new custom text. Seems to me this would be a likely scenario - managers would want to change the invitation text as more resends happen. With a final, "This is your last chance" message . . .

Just my suggestion . . .

Best,

Jim
