Hi Mark,

I saw the new wording re the special message option. Great!

A couple of questions/requests:

  • what is the "from" address of the message, and could it be possible to specify an option (group+owner address or other custom?)
  • could there be options to
    • add a specified hashtag
    • make the message a sticky
    • lock or moderate the topic?
Thanks!

Mark,

All the code is now written, but I have not yet decided how to do the
transition.
Apart from the eagerness to scratch that itch, one reason to do it the direct way would be if there's a likelihood that the process of doing it could reveal something you need to know to build the additional infrastructure. The risk is that doing it might instead (or also) reveal that the new search wasn't as ready as you thought, and now backing it out will take just as long.

On the whole, given that it needs to be done eventually, I'm content to wait for the additional infrastructure to be written.

Mark,

Just my thoughts here.

As long as you have a way to recover from an "oops!" situation, I
would rather see the shorter downtime situation. Not to reduce
downtime now, though. If it leads to a better situation for future
system upgrades, with less downtime for future upgrades, then even if
it took 6 or even 12 hours of downtime, I think it would be worth it.

If you would decapitate the site though by doing this if it messed up
in the process, then take the safer route. But you probably do (and
should) have a recovery process from backups if the worst should
happen.

I'll figure out which way I want to go early next week.

Quick update: I've been quiet on beta@ because I've been heads down trying to get the new search stuff completed. All the code is now written, but I have not yet decided how to do the transition. One possibility is taking the site down while I move everything to the new search system. That will probably take 4-5 hours (most of that is moving the archives, which is a bit more than 13M messages at this point). But it is not very risky and is ready to go now. The other possibility is perhaps a bit more risky and would require a bunch more work before I could do it. But it would only require less than an hour of downtime, is work I need to do eventually anyways, and would result in a system where I could make changes to search in the future without any downtime. I'll figure out which way I want to go early next week.

Changes to the site this week:

  • INTERNAL: Did another dump of the archives to the new search cluster.
  • SYSADMIN: Tested upgrade of database to Postgres 9.6.
  • INTERNAL: Completed work on converting system to new search cluster.
  • SYSADMIN: Revamped firewall rules for increased security.
  • INTERNAL: Now caching successful delivery information instead of directly writing it to the database.
  • CHANGE: When viewing an attachment, if there's an error from S3, retry an additional 2 times, for the case where a message was just added and the attachment hasn't had time to propagate to S3 properly.
  • CHANGE: Only permit changes to a group's plan if you are designated the payor.
  • CHANGE: In the Billing page, only show your payment history for the group.
  • SYSADMIN: Changed some Linux memory parameters on the main database machine in an attempt to track down the sporadic slow commit issue.
  • BUGFIX: Send confirmation email/send bounce probe were not working.
  • NEW: For premium/enterprise groups, 'Send Confirmation Email' is replaced with a 'Confirm' button, to confirm the member.
  • NEW: For premium/enterprise groups, when approving a pending subscriber who is also not confirmed, we confirm the member.

Have a good weekend everybody.

moderated clarify "editing" banner for wiki pages #suggestion

There is currently no distinction between the word "Editing" and the thing being edited. For example, in editing a page called Future Sessions, the text

Editing Future Sessions

appears at the top, all in the same font, with no separation or delineation.

In editing "links to favorite recordings,"

Editing links to favorite recordings

appears at the top.

I think some kind of delineator would clarify these. Something like

EDITING: Future Sessions

or putting the word "editing" in some other font. Perhaps even putting the wiki page name in quotes:

Editing "Future Sessions"

I haven't figured out a bi-monthly option, but I got one set up for every 2 weeks. I chose Weekly for Repeats, then Repeat Every 2 weeks below that. I had to pick a day of the week just under that. I tried it with and without an End Date and it showed up as expected. If you wanted to make sure it never came out more than twice in a month, you could make it a 3 week repeat. You could also use Daily for Repeats and set it for 15 days, but it would move around depending on the length of the month and could show up 3 times in a long month once in awhile. 16 days would prevent that, but at some point you'd only get one in February for awhile.

Another way would be to set up 2 repeating events, one around the 1st and one around the 15th. You'd have to remember to update both, if needed, though.

It would be nice to have a way of scheduling every-other-week recurring events in the calendar. Does anybody know of a workaround meanwhile?

moderated reword hashtag "alias" description on hashtag edit page #suggestion

Currently the "alias" description reads "This hashtag is an alias of another hashtag."
Would be better as "Specifies the alias of a hashtag" to avoid the misinterpretation that the specific hashtag IS an alias of another tag.

I thought it did? I remember it saying somethingn to the effect of "your group could take up to 3 days to get approved." or somethingn like that. I can't recall where I saw it though. That was a month  ago.

Take care all.

I just created a new group and keep trying to invite people to it, but being informed each time by a banner at the top that the group has not been approved yet. It would be more convenient to have a less "oracle" and more preemptive way of imparting this information, such as a banner that stays at the top, indicating the group has not yet been approved (etc.), until it is approved.

Yes, sometimes you don't have a keyword in mind. And guessing at a "common enough" word, the work-around that's needed now, is awkward and error-prone.

Which is exactly why I proposed that the Tools button be available without clicking Search first. That would make "recent" posts or posts on a certain date or range of dates a direct and simple filter operation.

For now, I find that searching for a common simple word, like 'the', using the date range of New Search finds most, if not all, of the posts (up until 7/18/2017 when the last import was done.) I think it would be very unusual to not have that word in a post, though it's not in your initial post on this thread. I did find that using 'a' or 'i' doesn't return as many results, so 'the' seems to be the best choice, for English anyway.
