moderated Ability to edit photo size without changing ownership

Frances commented, "It would be neat if the edit message box had the ability for a moderator / owner to move (or copy) the attachment to Files or Photos.

Along with this I would request a way to resample some image attachments smaller without changing ownership. While we may have an image maximum size set, some images may not be worth that much space.

My groups also have a similar problem in Photos. In the group move, we transferred some photos that are much larger than they need to be, and are pushing the group toward the size limitation. I would like the ability to use a utility like IrfanView http://www.irfanview.com/ to resample some of these down to a more reasonable size to replace the existing image. But I don't want to change the ownership of the image. Is there a way to accomplish this? I've wondered about this being something that might be included in a premium package, but the real value of such a feature would be more obvious for a regular group.

If this could be done, something similar in nature would be the ability to crop down an image where the background doesn't add to the value. There are occasions where saving the full resolution of the original subject but losing the superfluous background would be more useful.

Frances,

It would be neat if the edit message box (not sure of the name but I
will attach a photo!) had the ability for a moderator / owner to move
(or copy) the attachment to Files or Photos.
Ah yes, agreed.

That could also be the way you put a "keep" on particular attachments that you don't want swept away by the quota monster. Just as long as there remains a link from the message to the moved/copied former attachments.

Otherwise, we need a feature to put a "keep" marker on particularly valuable attachments. Age alone is not a sufficient measure of an attachment's value.

Mark,

40 groups have had their attachments permanently deleted.

The ability to add an attachment to a stored message by editing it would come in handy just about now... My PTA group has a few that I'd put back if I could.

Also, there's no indication that the message ever had an attachment. It would be much friendlier if the deletion had left behind some marker with as much meta-data as is known about what had been attached. That goes for the intended use case as well as the accident.

Ah, there is one indication: there's still a paperclip icon in the Topics/Messages list. But not on the page of the message itself.

Hi All,

A quick update. I have restored the attachments to the 27 groups that I was able to. I have also just now sent an email to the moderators of the 40 affected groups.

We store attachments using Amazon's S3 service. I was unaware that they offer the ability to recover deleted files. Unfortunately that's a feature you need to enable ahead of time, so I was not able to utilize it for this. I have enabled it going forward. This was also an "opportunity" to test our database backups, which worked as expected.

I will send out a proper post mortem on Monday, explaining how this happened and listing the additional things I'll be doing to prevent this from happening again.

Thanks,
Mark

Groups created from approximately Dec 22, 2014 until Feb 10, 2015 are missing their attachments right now but I hope to be able to restore them.

I will be sending emails to the owners of all the affected groups later today. And I will update this topic with a full post-mortem when I have more information.

I am horrified that this happened, and am truly sorry.

Helen,

It says Your changes have been changed, but they haven't.
If you haven't, try refreshing the page after making changes. F5 in most browsers, and if that doesn't work Ctrl+F5.

If refreshing the page works, the fact that you needed to refresh the page might be a bug. What browser and OS are you using?

No, in my main group. I hope Mark will look at this soon.

Can you help me with my problem?

I am trying to delete a few members as moderator of a group.

All necessary boxes are checked that would allow me to take action(sorry if I am not saying the correct words) but I can not remove members

If I enter on a member’s name it will take me to the page of all my groups instead of that specific member’s profile or whatever it is called, the place where I have the option to remove.

Is that how this is supposed to work?

I just tested it and it seemed to work for me. I first banned an email address. Then I unbanned it. It showed up in the Past Members dated as of the minute I unbanned it.

Sounds like you have not been given the necessary moderator permissions:

o Remove Members
o Ban Members
o Set Member Subscription Options (also allows access to the member list)

Particularly that last one. Check with your group owner (or whoever made you a moderator) about that.

By the way, that parenthetical note on the latter appears to be wrong:
without that permission I (as a moderator) have access to the list, but it shows no checkboxes, just as you describe.

That may be a bug, or a change in the interface that isn't reflected by that note, I don't recall which.

Yup, did to me too. That certainly seems like a bug. Probably it would be better if it popped up a "You don't have permission" notice rather than behave mysteriously.

moderated problem with members list

Sugar

Hi I have tried to contact Mark but I’ve not heard anything

Maybe some one can help me?

I am moderator of a group.

I have access to do what I need to do to remove members.

When I go to the the member’s list

There is no check box to choose the member I want to remove and if I press enter on the status of the member it will take me to the page of all my groups

Instead of to the page where I need to take action towards this member or members.

Can anyone assist or let me know why that is?

Sugar

moderated Re: Request: Add All HTML Tools/Buttons to Markdown Mode Toolbar #suggestion

Jim,

TL;DR: It sounds like my suggestion matches what you want.

As an example, the Discourse Forum Markdown Editor shows this after
the upload/insert, while still in markdown edit mode:

<img
src="/uploads/default/original/2X/0/0dba4cc76b02558b28e6f0bdf1f16a4149bbc9b7.png"

width="690" height="267">
That's similar in form to what I proposed. It looks like that long src parameter value "/uploads/...9b7.png" names where they stored the image content, with that path being relative to some base path within their system.

When delivering that message to your browser that path would have to be replaced by an address (URL) in https: protocol that your browser would fetch, or be replaced by the file content itself (using data: instead of https: protocol).

Groups.io could do something similar, but in addition to providing a rendering for your browser (when looking at the message in the group's Messages section) Groups.io has to generate an HTML rendering to send to members' email interfaces. My message was mostly about email rendering.

moderated Re: Request: Add All HTML Tools/Buttons to Markdown Mode Toolbar #suggestion

Shal,

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm not sure what it means.
As long as the user can easily select/upload an image file that is inserted inline with the text, I'm pretty open/flexible.

As an example, the Discourse Forum Markdown Editor shows this after the upload/insert, while still in markdown edit mode:

<img src="/uploads/default/original/2X/0/0dba4cc76b02558b28e6f0bdf1f16a4149bbc9b7.png" width="690" height="267">

But if Mark can add Code Block to the HTML toolbar, then my team will be happy.  We would have one editor that can both Insert Images and Code Block with syntax highlighting.

Jim Underwood

I don't know if it would meet Jim's desires, but one way out of that
bind would be to show a cid: or data: marker where the the GIT example
shows https: - but elide out the actual image file content (perhaps show
a file name, image count or other placeholder instead). Sort-of like a
footnote, but the content isn't displayed in the edit box, it only goes
into the text/HTML of the outbound message. The text/plain would only
show the placeholder.
