Re: saving history or members page for past members in premium groups

This morning I noticed that I can access a past member's member page through the group activity log if I *happen* to find a logged action involving them. So for example, this morning I was able to update a past member's "notes" page because there was a recent activity involving them.

However, the only way to find these pages appears to be through the group activity log (which is hard to search because searching on email addresses does not return correct results - it always returns the entire activity log).

That's not quite correct. You currently cannot view a subscription from someone who is not currently subscribed to your group. What you're seeing is a person's current subscription (they left before, which is why there's a record in the activity log of them leaving, but they are currently subscribed to your group).

So here's my question again: for premium groups, are there plans to be able to access the member page of a past member through the "past member" page, instead of just searching through the group activity log? Currently the "past members" page just lists unclickable email addresses.

Yes, I definitely plan on adding something like this. What information would you like to view from someone who was subscribed, but is no longer a part of the group? Everything? Or just notes?

I have fixed the issue of some Reasons not being displayed in the Past Members page, and you can now sort by Reason as well.

You had asked in another email about inconsistencies involving banned members and the Past Members page. Here's how that all currently works:

- When you ban someone, if they are a current member, a status bit is set on their subscription record saying they're banned.
- If you ban someone that isn't currently a member, a new subscription record is created with the proper status bit set.
- If you then unban someone, that subscription record is simply deleted from the database. If you have a premium group, the subscription record is saved in the past members table, just like if someone had left your group normally.

So, in the Past Members page, you'll see some reasons as 'Unbanned'.

Should these records be saved/displayed in the Past Members page? Got a better name for Unbanned? Suggestions appreciated.

Hope this helps.

I just made a change to how we handle storage limits with subgroups. Previously, the space used by all subgroups of a group was totaled up and included in the storage used by the main group. So, for a free group with two subgroups, the total amount of storage available to those 3 groups was 1GB. I've changed it so that all groups and subgroups are independent of each other when calculating storage used. So, for a free group, a main group will have 1GB of storage and each subgroup will also have 1GB of storage.

I had a change of heart about this over vacation and have rolled back this change. I think from a business perspective as well as a product perspective, it makes more sense that a group and all subgroups share a unified amount of storage space.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks, Mark

I haven't tested it with subgroups, but I believe that moderator email is
separate for each subgroup, i.e. subgroup+owner@groupname.groups.io

Also not very intuitive what the purpose of that email name is either.

Probably true, although if you put it on the home page description it would
make more sense.

No, not the current concept of a drop box.  The really old one where it
is a mail box that you drop things into for others to read later.  You
drop things and then you can't get them back.
Aha! A USPS Drop Box. Do they still have those? They must although I
can't recall seeing one right now. All I can remember are UPS or FedEx
dropboxes!

Also, the idea was to have an archive of the messages to the board.  Sending to owner doesn't do that either.

I did test the concept and it works as expected.  Looks like it may be able to only send to the owner/moderators of the sub group and not to all other sub groups.

Sorry, I haven't followed the thread from the beginning, but if you just want
non-members to be able to send unmoderated messages to the "board" of
the club, you could make them all moderators, then adjust their
notifications appropriately.

Then the single email address "groupname-owner@groups.io" will go to
all the moderators. Those messages do not go to the group, even to the
moderation queue.

By Drop Box do you mean a place to store files? The moderator solution
wouldn't address that.

Jeff,

Was kind of hoping to use a sub group as a place to let people direct
questions to the board of the club instead of using an email
redirection service.
I have a similar situation with my PTA group.

It sounds like we could both use an option, in subgroups, that allows non-moderated posting by parent group members.

For "outsiders" (not members of either the subgroup or the parent group) I think the restriction that their messages must be moderated is still a good idea.

It can be done as a sub group, but it requires every message to
be moderated first and that would get tedious to moderate and then
reply to the inquiry and then moderate any response and ... so on.
In practice this has not been a big issue. But the number of times a regular PTA member has emailed the board has been low, "your mileage may vary".

It does seem that way.  The parent has a forced check box for the Spam Control.  However, when I look at Sub Groups, there is no required check box, and it does not seem to matter what I check, it does not change things.  I have not tried every combination yet.  I t looks like the Message Policies - Allow Non Subscribers To Post forces moderation with no other options.

moderated PDFs in Files lose their hyperlinked Table of Contents #bug #suggestion

Frances

I uploaded a PDF made with Apple Pages (converted from my brother's .doc file). The PDF hyperlinked TOC worked fine on my Mac computer.
It lost them when I uploaded it to Files.
I tested sending it to the group (my test group) as a message and attachment. It kept its hyperlinked TOC.
So there is something wrong in the upload function in Files.

I did have a problem crashing Safari when trying to upload the PDF to Files. Firefox worked fine.
The good news is that it correctly kept its password when uploaded.

And a nice-to-have: It would be lovely if I could move a post attachment to Files . It would be convenient. Can't see a way to do that.

Jeff,

I can not figure out how to NOT moderate every message that comes in
from the public.
That ability is not available. Deliberately, I believe.

The restriction that non-member posts must be moderated is an anti-spam measure. It is there to protect your group members from an onslaught of spam should your group address get into spammer lists.

It is also there to protect the reputation of Groups.io (in the eyes of receiving email services) so that messages posted through this service are more likely to be delivered to users' inboxes than to their Spam folder.

moderated Drop Box

Jeff Kane

I want to have a sub group that is like a Drop Box.  I want anyone, even the public, to be able to send messages to the sub group.  Only members of the sub group will be able to see the message archives and they will all get the messages as they come in.

I can not figure out how to NOT moderate every message that comes in from the public.

I set this ...
Allow Non Subscribers to Post

Posts by non-subscribers will be moderated, instead of rejected.

I leave all of the moderation settings off.
Restricted Membership

Members require approval before being allowed to join the group.

Announcement Group

Only moderators are allowed to post.

Moderated

All posts require approval before being sent to the group.

New Users Moderated

Posts from new subscribers require approval.

Yet, it still asks me to moderate every post sent to that sub group.

Can I have a have a group like a Drop Box?

moderated Private Parent and Public Sub Group shows Sub Group as Private even though it is Public

Jeff Kane

I created a private parent group.  I want only club members to be in the group and no messages to everyone unless a moderator.  Easy enough.

I created a sub group that members can opt into that will have public messages in it.  I set the sub group to public.  That works and I log out and can still see the messages in that sub group, but can not see them in the private parent group.

So here's the possible bug.  When I log back in and look at the sub groups tab under the parent, I see this "5 Members, 2 Topics, Private Archives, Last Post: 8:43 am".  That sub Group is set to "Listed in parent group, publically viewable archives" in the settings screen.  As I said above, I can log out and still see those messages.  So, the Sub Groups tab on the left shows the wrong details for the Sub Group when it is public under a parent that is private.  Not a big deal, just a little confusing.

Hi,

Ask Mark (via the support address) to take your Mbox archive and specify which list or subgroup the messages should belong to. In my case, I’m trying to move two Freelists archives into two lists on Groups.IO with parsing issues encountered along the way.

Cheers,

I manage an email list currently hosted on a commercial Mailman provider. The provider does not include a search capability, and for this particular list, that would be very helpful. I'm interested in transferring the list and its archives to a paid groups.io account.

Is there a groups.io API I can use to bulk-transfer the old messages into groups.io? It's not a problem for me to do some programming to parse the Mailman archives as necessary and call an API to store each message.

Thanks.
