Hi All,

There was a problem with the physical machine I migrated to the other night. This manifested in the site running slow last night for a couple of hours and again this afternoon. After consulting with Linode tech support, we decided the best thing to do was to move the instance to a different machine. Doing so required the Groups.io site to be taken down; we were off-line from 2:30pm to 3:18pm. The site is back up and speedy once again.

Looks like I picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue.

Thanks, Mark

Dave,

But it would be useful if there was an option to set the default time
zone of a group for those who never visit the web interface.
If they never visit the web interface I don't think it would matter what time zone is set for them there.

And when they do register or log-in on the website for the first time their timezone will be automatically detected and set for them.

Re: saving history or members page for past members in premium groups

This morning I noticed that I can access a past member's member page through the group activity log if I *happen* to find a logged action involving them. So for example, this morning I was able to update a past member's "notes" page because there was a recent activity involving them.

However, the only way to find these pages appears to be through the group activity log (which is hard to search because searching on email addresses does not return correct results - it always returns the entire activity log).

So here's my question again: for premium groups, are there plans to be able to access the member page of a past member through the "past member" page, instead of just searching through the group activity log? Currently the "past members" page just lists unclickable email addresses. It would seem easy to add this feature, since it's already there and just not accessible through the "past members" page, which would seem the obvious, and be the simplest, means of access.

Thanks and Happy 4th of July!

It would be logical to be able to choose this at the account level
like time zone. And support International/Scandinavian format as
well (Y/M/D).

I have in the past strongly advocated for the ISO 8601 date and time display standard. That is YYYY-MM-DDT23:59:59 . If the time is in UTC, a Z is added after the time without a space. This standard uses a 24 hour clock and uses zero-padded single digit increments. The great advantage to this is that the sort to chronological is a simple numerical sort. If there is a need for a less accurate date, the smaller increments to the right can be omitted.

In this case the time zone would be either local time or would be indicated by Z for UTC or the offset from UTC.

More information :

https://www.iso.org/standard/40874.html

This has been discussed in the past and may be on Mark's to-do list in one form or another.

I agree that would be a very useful feature.
Problem would then become how to update existing users who joined before this feature was introduced?

I am aware of that setting and have advised those complaining about
Pacific Time to set it in their account. But it would be useful if there was
an option to set the default time zone of a group for those who never visit
the web interface.

Our group, while mainly UK based, has members spread around the world who
want to see their local time - they would not want their time setting
overridden and inconsistent between groups.

I suggest putting something in your group welcome message to encourage
people to set their time zone appropriately.

On a related matter, it would be useful for us to be able to define date
in the D/M/Y format - most dates come up as eg 2nd July but in a number of
places they appear as M/D/Y which is confusing for those outside the USA.

It would be logical to be able to choose this at the account level like time
zone. And support International/Scandinavian format as well (Y/M/D).

There is an option in your account details to set the time zone you use.
I have it set to "UTC (Dublin, Edinburgh, Lisbon, London)" and get
postings as "BST".

As an aside, I would prefer it if postings about outages etc. gave times
in UTC as well as Mark's local time.

moderated Outage report #downtime

Hi All,

The site was down between 6:38pm and 7:03pm and again between 9:51pm and 10:23pm Pacific time.

The original outage was due to a large digest being generated and sent to several hundred people. This exposed a new out-of-memory issue in our message queue system, which caused it to crash. Every part of the site depends on the message queue, so when it went down, it took the entire site down with it. Also unfortunately, the cats maintenance page did not automatically come up when this happened, because I had not configured the new load balancer that I installed last week correctly. So, people going to the website saw a cryptic error message.

Due to spotty cell service, I did not receive any pages about the original outage until about 6:50pm. I initially diagnosed the problem and got the site back up within 13 minutes. To do that, I had to clear out the message queue, saving an off-line backup first. The backup contained approximately 500 large unsent digest messages. I took the next few hours to analyze the situation and verify that my initial hunch was correct (and that it wasn't some other issue).

To fix the issue of the message queue running out of memory, I needed to upgrade the machine it runs on. That was the cause of the second, intentional outage, starting at 9:51pm. Once that machine was upgraded, I was able to restore the backed-up message queue and send out the digest messages. Because of the system being down at the time, the normal 10pm digest run was delayed until 10:30pm. As far as I can tell, no messages were lost because of this outage.

I have also fixed the configuration issue with the load balancer, so the cats maintenance page will come up if the site has a problem.

Thanks, Mark

Not all quotes are recognized by the software, especially in languages other than English. There is an item on the TODO list for this:

Hi All,

The Yahoo easy group transfer system has been adapted to the new Yahoo login system and is working once again. All pending group transfers have been completed or are in process. If I've somehow forgotten about your transfer, please ping me.

About Dropbox integration that would be excellent to post a file to files section that is one my dropbox. If I do an update, the "link" to files section give the information. It's more easly for update documents to groups.
