I've enabled this for the beta group, so people can see how it behaves. So, any message you send to beta@groups.io, you should receive a copy as well.

Thanks, Mark

Well, apparently not always. LOL  I still have one Yahoo group that always sends me back a copy.

I vote yes, enable for all.

I think it's more of a downside to not have it that way as people keep asking mods if their message went through because they didn't get a copy. The common question is: "I'm getting other people's posts, but not my own. What am I doing wrong?" They tend to assume they're not doing it right or there's something wrong with the list service...at which point they start griping and complaining about the "lousy service."

What Mark said - and blame my email client for sticking in the leading spaces. I'm not sure if I have a control for that, the leading spaces don't show in my compose window.

Last night I uploaded an 11 MB file. When it finished, it dumped me to a editfile# page (sorry, I didn't note the exact wording) with Hello on it. I said a few choice words, then realized it actually uploaded. This morning I uploaded the same file to another group and it went back to the Files page properly when finished.

Hmmm. Maybe you got caught as I was updating the site? Please let me know if you see the error again.
I thought about that, and have with other unusual things, but I figure I should mention them, just in case it's some of those pesky little bugs trying to sneak in.

Thanks again,

If you're referring to how they show up on the website, the reason Shal's message has '>' and yours has a grey bar, is that Shal inserted a space before every '>' in each line of his message (or his email program did). If the first character on a line is a '>', we do the gray bar thing.

The fix for multiple pages works fine at the main level, but doesn't work in a folder. The multipage buttons are at the bottom of the folder, but clicking on any of them takes me to the main level. By altering the URL to include the folder name, it works.

Doh. Fixed.

Is there a way to show folders at the top? I think a lot of us are used to this layout and I'd prefer it for the default view.

Just made it the default now.

On the error message for duplicate uploading, it would be nice if it checked the name before uploading the file.

Not sure that's possible. But I will investigate.

Agreed.
Personally I agree, but I'm concerned that some of our users may not realize they should delete everything they don't need. And since the cursor doesn't appear above the quoted text lead in, some users will plug in the new text right there. I'd rather see a button, perhaps next to the format option, to add quoted text. Hopefully that would encourage posters to *not* add it unless they consciously need it.

No need to push up against the standard's 80 limit, I'd go with more
like 72, and then not count initial gt (">"), bar ("|") or space
characters (maybe initial non-alphanumerics). That would avoid having
multi-level quotes turn into gibberish.
Another comment, and there may be a reason this won't work, is to leave off spaces between '>'s, or at least only use one space, to prevent pushing the quoted text off the page in long discourses. More like this:

FWIW, the emails currently generated with long quoted lines not
wrapped still look fine (like your paragraph here).

Hi Mark,
I use  Windows Live Messenger and wouldn't trust anything Google further than I could throw it, so not a problem for me; I just wanted to be reassured that we wouldn't lose it.

Mark,

I think it makes sense to just remove that button and have the
message quoted in the reply box.
Agreed.

So, when quoting a message for reply, you want long lines wrapped?
Not necessarily automatically. Sometimes wrap algorithms have unexpected results, which I'd like to be able to undo and re-do by hand.

Around what # of characters per line, 78?

In the text/HTML, yes, but not so much in the text/plain part.

Speaking of which, maybe the format selector for a reply should match that of the replied message, saving the user's profile option for new posts. That is, my post was text/plain - your reply I think should be likewise, unless you deliberately change it. Or have I already missed that boat?

Too, I was thinking of the wrap feature in the context of a plain text reply. In HTML the handling of quoted matter is entirely different, and we need formatting tools to allow us to add and remove blockquote layers. I'm not sure if that's what the paragraph indent/outdent buttons do (they sure don't on Y! Groups).

Markdown likewise, since it sees paragraphs rather than lines, an initial > is to blockquote the paragraph is fine.

It is a bit of semantics, but important to note: Gmail does receive your massage back (in both a Y! Group and Groups.io), but Gmail chooses not to show it to you in your inbox. I think you can see it in the "All Mail" box, and of course if you POP or IMAP from Gmail into an email client.

Mark,

It sounds like many people want to have the messages they send to
groups show up in their mailbox.
They already do for me. ;-)

And likewise I'm sure for anyone not using Gmail in the default way, or like-minded services.

I'm not currently using Gmail for any groups, but when I do I retrieve the messages through an email client, and with the "Recent:" modifier on my User Name (which, among other things, ensures that I get my own messages back).

Should I enable that for all groups and all users?
That would mean replacing the Message-ID on every message sent through Groups.io (as opposed to "only when edited")?

Can you see any downside with doing so?
Apart from those (and there no doubt are those) who are accustomed to and prefer not receiving their own back, replacing the Message-ID on all messages makes me nervous. But that may only be because I'm not accustomed to it - I don't immediately see a serious downside.

It does mean that a reply that I receive as both CC and via a group will have different IDs, which will mean that I won't find one or the other when tracking down the reference for a message when someone doesn't include any context quote. But I'll still find one of them so I don't see the problem.

I suspect that anyone who is used to any listerver
other than LSoft is going to expect it. I don't
know of any way to turn it off on Yahoo or Google,
and I *think* I remember that it's possible with
MailMan, but none of my Y refugees wanted it
implemented if so. LSoft has "noack" - it's not
your message but an acknowledgement that your
message made it, as well as the other setting that
lets you not see your own posts, and it was a
subscriber option, not a list option. Can't remember
with Lyris either - but again I never implemented
it when I was using a Lyris server, so the only list
I don't see my own messages on is the old PSU list
running on LSoft (I think it was the default in 1989
when I joined that list!).

Which is a very long way of saying - I don't see any
downside.
