David C,

You will soon run headfirst into the problem(s) with letting members edit their messages, assuming your group is unmoderated. GMF is moderated and won't experience the problems. Beta is unmoderated and eventually disabled editing for what I suspect are the same reasons many others of us with unmoderated groups ran into.

That depends on which button you click after editing one. There are "Save and Send" and "Save Without Sending" available.

Although you have now found a way to edit messages I would ask why you
would want to do this. Those who receive them by email will not see the
updated version. Surely the way to do it is to create a new messages
explaining the changes so that all your members see it.

Agreed, it would be better to put these (edit subject and edit message) together.

BTW, I guess you saw that you can change permissions for your members.  In Admin, Settings, Messages. You can disallow members editing messages. For example, Beta group doesn't allow this. GroupManagersForum does allow editing of my own messages.

That was it, thanks!

It's rather non-intuitive.

Why not include "Edit Message" in the drop-down along with "Edit Subject"?

Thanks again!

Hi David,

Have you tried clicking on More in the bottom of the message?

Here's what it looks like on my family group on a message I wrote (to my brother David!):

In theory this can be done ...

Edit Messages
Edit already posted messages, and view previous revisions of messages.

I'm the Owner of https://se-usatechforum.groups.io/

I'm only offered the option of editing the Subject and not the text of a Message.

Is there a setting I need to toggle somewhere, please?

Thanks!

J,

I've been going through some old topics based on search criteria.
Every time I do something to one of them (such as lock it), I am
taken out of the search results and back to the top of the complete
topics list, and have to do the search over again.
You may well know this already, but one work-around for this is to not leave the search results page.

Instead of clicking on at item use Ctrl+Shift+click - open in new tab and switch to it. That way when you're done with the item you simply close the new tab and the browser puts you back in the original tab - the still-open result list.

That works in Firefox and the other browsers I've used (Chrome, IE). Or you can right-click on the link and select the option of your choice. Your mileage may vary on other browsers, but there's probably an equivalent easy way to open a link in a new tab or window, rather than opening it in the current tab/window.

That isn't to say Mark shouldn't improve what happens with the groups.io site, but I've found that trick extremely useful on many different sites. So much so that my left fingers automatically move to Ctrl+Shift whenever I think of clicking on a link.

I think half of the world would appreciate the possibility to customize the timestamp format and also the calendar preferences.

24 hours indication instead of AM/PM and calendar beginning on Monday and European date formats like MM.DD.YYYY etc.

Hello dear beta group.

I would add to the wish list a possibility to customize the automated messages related to subsciption, confirmations etc. It would improve greatly the acceptance of a new platform (we're in process of moving Finnish groups to Groups.io) that the messages could be provided in local language.

I'm assuming you post is meant for group owners/moderators who intend to move their group to groups.io.

We moved our group in May 2016 which then had over 140,000 posts and 3000 members and it went off without a hitch.

I agree, no sense telling them till it works on the new site.

Would it be possible to be taken back to where you were in topic search results after acting on a particular topic within the results?

moderated Group transfer process suggestion

Based on my experience moving a large group with a large archive, I would like to offer the following suggestion:
• Don't send out the notice letter telling members they have been moved until after the message archive is done populating.

In the group in question, the rush to post caused a number of messages to fall into the middle of the transferred message archives, which had not completely transferred. (We had in excess of 30,000 posts, which took a few hours.) Additionally, I had a large number of people who thought they needed to move themselves, causing even more mayhem. I liken the ensuing chaos to trying to pour a concrete sidewalk in front of an elementary school on a Friday afternoon. The suggestion is intended to not let them know until the concrete is set. Thanks!

moderated Poll Results #suggestion

While we're writing a wish list for polls, it would be a big help to be able to email results to only the moderator(s), rather than the group as it is now. There are times when a poll is done to help owners and moderators work up programming, collect input, etc., when emailing results to the membership is not necessarily applicable but of high value to the administrators of the group.

I agree that this being added to the activity log would be wonderful!

Another poll suggestion: would it be possible to have a link to the "results so far" to send the group via a message in the poll thread?  I'm looking for a simple way to update group members on the results so far, and to encourage them to take part in the poll. I tried sending the URL for the results page but it just linked back to the thread itself. (This is not as important as my first request, which is that there be some indication in the logs, or any log, that there was activity in the poll. Currently the only way to see that is to go into the actual poll.)
