Wonderful! I just have to remember to click the Plain Text choice BEFORE I start typing, because if I do it in the middle, it adds all kinds of weird characters!

And yes, I would be thrilled if this could eventually be a defaulted option that I wouldn't have to change every time I reply. :)

This just gets better and better!

JohnF,

It's easier to understand that if you don't normally receive mail, but
there are a few types of message that you do want to receive in mail,
you Follow.
Precisely. You select "Following Only" and follow what you want.

In your choice of Individual or Digest (or Special Notices or No Email if you want to turn them off, say while you're on vacation).

If you normally receive mail, but there are a few types of messages that
you don't want, you Mute.
Precisely. You select "All Messages" and you mute what you don't want.

Same delivery options.

Frances,

But I really don't want to lose the possibility of First Message Only.
Easy.

Select "Following Only" then check "First Message Also". Then if you don't explicitly follow any threads or hashtags you'll get only the first message of every thread.

locked Re: New Subscription Options

Brenda,

Give us simple options and advanced options.
That's what I'm trying to do.

Under simple options, use these concepts:

Individual messages
Daily Digest
Special Notices
No Mail
Got that, it isn't called "simple options", but those are the "Email Delivery" options on Mark's mock-up:
https://groups.io/static/newsubpage

If you adjust only that Option, leaving the other set to the default "All Messages", then you get the simple, Yahoo Groups-like behavior (assuming you don't mute any threads).

Under Advanced options:

The things you and Mark are describing about muted and followed stuff.
Exactly. Those are under "Message Selection".

The "Message Selection" options work subordinate to the "Email Delivery" options. Even if you use the Follow and Mute controls to limit the messages you receive, you receive them Individually, in a daily Digest, or not at all according to your Email Delivery selection.

Judy,

The date would not help people who read off and on all day long, so it would be the same date. I do fine with post numbers, like I said, that's how I always read my groups, but others are used to coming into a group and knowing what messages are "new."

Warning: That isn't always a link to the group.io group. In his case, yes, it is. But it's actually the link that you can add to your Groups description as a website link. In his case, it's his group. But if you check out mine:

https://groups.io/org/groupsio/MMsanctuary

Group Information

You'll see that the link is NOT to MMSanctuary, but to my Yahoo Crusade Blog. So you have to put in the link that you want to be there in that space in description of group. Understand?

Hope that helps!

Mark, I hate to keep referring to Yahoo Groups, but since that’s my only example…….. Maybe we are talking about two different things.

I view all of my messages in Outlook, but I click the ‘reply via web post’ option at the bottom of the message and actually reply on the group.  When I click Reply, I have the option to show history and I delete everything except the most recent message (to this specific message).  It allows me to reply at the top so when someone reads my reply, they see it first and don’t have to hunt for it further down in the message.

Since on the beta group, I am replying directly from Outlook, my reply is always at the top.  Note I have Outlook set to reply at the top.  I’m sure you are wondering why I do it one way in Yahoo and another here.  The reason I do is because I don’t have the options at the bottom of each message here in groups.io that I do in Yahoo Groups.

Also while I’m thinking about it, at some point will we have a cc and a bcc option in messages?  Also, would like to have an option to reply to sender only and not have it go to the group.

Thanks,

Are you referring to viewing a message thread, where the newer messages are at the bottom? You can re-sort it so that the newest messages are at the top, but clicking the little 1->9 arrow next to 'Date' in the top right of the page. Unfortunately, you'll have to do that for every thread right now, but it's on the todo list to have it remember your setting.

First I should explain I'm using Full Message View on the group page. For me, Reply just opened a reply below the link to reply and left the rest of the page. I think that's good. I like the plain text/html option, but wonder if the switch might be to the right of the "Reply" link to save space and make it faster to find.

I suppose the easiest way to add quoted text is just to copy and paste. I like to use the greater-than sign to show quoted text in plain text messages.

I'll see if there are any issues after I hit Send.

Mark, will replying in the reply box allow that reply to show at the top of the message or do you at least have an option?

Okay, I'm absolutely thrilled with the Message Numbers, just have a few questions or suggestions.

First, I'm just as confused as Johnf is about the difference in the total number of posts and post #'s. I realize that it is probably because some posts have been deleted, but is there a way for the programming to keep the total what it would have been before they were deleted? If not, I can live with it, just wondered.

Second, is there a way to put somewhere with the post #, the total number of posts? It would be nice to know when I'm reading Post 1025 if there are 5 more to read or 50.

Third, I don't know if this was explained clearly enough when I first tried it, so I'll try it again. Is there a way to shift message #'s to be read smallest to largest even if it's flipped on a page? In other words, be able to change the direction the numbers go, but NOT be jumped to the beginning or the end. That would be awesome if it could be done.

Fourth, Is there a way to use RSS with this group?

And last but not least. Is there a way that we can mark posts "read" or not on the website, or that they could be a different color once we read them on the website, so that when we come back to the website, we know exactly where we left off to read next? I don't mind writing the number with a pencil on a pad, but I know others will.

Thanks,
Brenda

Except it didn't in Yahoo, when they made the e-mail a non-receiving e-mail. That's what I meant. Some people have e-mail addresses with no mailbox attached to it, just for being in groups. :)

The owner always knows the methods chosen by the members, because it all appears in the membership list for the owners. But that's not the point here.

The issue being discussed was about someone being on No Mail and the owner maybe needing to contact them, so I simply suggested that if they didn't want to get mail at the e-mail they subscribe with, they can make sure the owner has one they can be reached at if needed.

As for why an owner might need to contact a member in the group? I could give you a long list of reasons but I don't have all night. ;)

But one reason in NEO was Yahoo kept resetting people's settings, and people who weren't wanting NO MAIL were set to it, and only the owner was able to change their settings back to what they wanted.

locked Home Page Formatting #suggestion

Nightowl >8#

Okay, the Home page format was one of our biggest problems in Ygroups, especially when NEO hit. So it's pretty much a dealbreaker for many people if the Home Page is hard to configure or work with.

Cover Photo:

So far, even I can't figure out how to put up a photo well without a lot of hassle, stretching of the photo, or more. The only reason my two Owl banners work is someone else made them, and they worked in the nightmare format NEO gave us. I attempted on Owlperch to make a black frame, and make the black frame the right size, and position the photo inside of it, but it still stretched. Is that any sort of an option, have a background we could choose and then position our photo inside that background somewhere?

Group Title:

I understand you wanting the title of the group on top of the photo, but that is very problematic with colors and shades of different group photos. What if you just made a banner bar at the bottom, in black with the group title, and made the photo space a little shorter? Then maybe we could find a way to easily put a photo up? Bear in mind that most groups changed their cover photos often, some even daily or weekly, so that needs to be something they can easily do, and not everyone can edit photos.

Home Page Format:

The Home page has the cover photo and description of the group, but as it has been pointed out, doesn't easily direct you to the Archive/ Message Board or Page or etc. What about adding a button or a link with some words that say something like "To view the posts Archive, past and present" click here. I saw that you made a link on your Beta Home Page, but I would not have understood what that was for if someone in here hadn't pointed it out.

Another option would be if the group is public, to have the last 5 posts appear on the Home Page, or maybe the last 5 first posts of the last 5 threads, something to get their attention, so that they could click on those and be taken to the Archives.

Anyone else want to weigh in on this?

Brenda

Not sure what workaround you are referring to. Do you mean having to direct your members to the messages, or do you mean having to log in again once you logged out?

I too agree, maybe there should be a better more obvious link/button or a few messages on the Home page to take you to the "archives" page.

I definitely think it should be Enter to single space.  Use the SHFT + Enter for the odd spacing.

Also, I always want my replies to be at the top of the message.  If there are numerous replies, it gets confusing where the latest reply is if it’s at the bottom.

No, that's not a linux thing. It happens with everyone, but maybe once Mark gets the auto quoting working it will jump us to the bottom and into the reply box instead of up to the top of the page.

Hilary's husband wrote:>>And hitting return gives me two lines worth of space, not one. So I have to backspace a line to tidy things up."<<

That's this stupid editor. ;) Wordpress did it too, and I hated it.Suz hated it too, because she had to clean up all the spaces for me since she was the editor. ;)

If you want a single space, you have to hit Shift-Enter, instead of enter. But no matter what I do, I always screw it up and have bunches of spaces I have to clean up after typing each line.

I wish that there was a way to default to single space with enter, but that's something else to ask Mark down the line...and believe me, I will. Meantime, if you want single spaces, always hit Shift-Enter together and you'll get them.

Brenda, if I recall, Yahoo Groups Neo was like that in the beginning.  They then added Sort and View preferences and also Navigation Preferences.  This sure made it a lot easier for those of us that always looked at one specific thing.  In my case, Photos Album View, Messages not Topics, etc.

Maybe Mark can come up with something similar to what I have provided above.

I am definitely confused about the inbox. I don't even want to use it. I set bookmarks for my groups, and I want to be able to go right to the group itself and be at the archives. Problem is, when I sign in, I am taken right to the Inbox where I don't want to be. So then I have to choose one to get back to the group.

Is it possible to sign in on any group archive page and stay on that page, or will I always be thrown out of the group to the Inbox? Or, is it possible to have a "sign in" page where I can sign in and then choose a group so I'm not thrown out of it right after signing in?

Thanks,
