locked Add Ability to Add Pictures to Databases #suggestion

Maria

It occurred to me that if we had the ability to add pictures to databases that we could replicate the needs mentioned in the previous post re: member directory.

And we could make it therefore totally separate from one's profile info.

If we can add pictures to a database, we can create custom directories with fields for very specific info that would be useful.

I imagine this would be useful to others too - like if there is a group about pets people could upload pics of their pet with data about age/breed etc...

Maybe this is easier at this time than the directory and separate custom profile info.. for now.

We could totally work this out with a database that allows users to upload pics.

Thanks!

Maria

A member directory that would show in a grid/list format a member's public profile ( for those who elect to have one).

This way with one click you could see a grid/list with pictures and names from the public profile members have already set up for those in your group.

It wouldn't list their email address - so it wouldn't interfere with that owner setting to keep the member list visible only to owners and mods. but would enable those who select to have a profile picture / profile to be listed in the directory of their group.

We would only use this in face to face small committee subgroups but it would be ever so useful.

Also - we'd love if the info included in one's profile could be customized for sub-groups. This way people can include relevant info that may be relevant only within that sub-group and that they may not be comfortable sharing publicly across groups.io or their larger group.

Thank you!

Mark,

It's more legible post-tweak but yes, I'd tweak just a bit more. Welcome back! :-)

I tweaked and added several hashtag colors yesterday. I just tweaked the yellow and aqua, although I think they may need additional tweaking.

(And yes, I'm back from vacation, and I am working through the backlog of emails and stuff).

Thanks,

Most browsers will give you the option to open a link(file) in a new window (or tab.)  Try right clicking on the link/filename, then select "Open Link in New Window (or Tab)".

Opps, after I hit send, I realized I probably should have post to the Group Managers.  I will re-post there.

I know this has been discussed before and I did a search and read the related messages.  This is what is confusing me...When I reply to messages, I almost always use the reply function of my email client.  It appears ONLY my messages are posting as a separate Topic which is requiring me to Merge them.  I just ran a test and replied via my email client--it posted as a separate topic and then replied again directly from the group and that one ended up within the original Topic.  I would really like to not have to log in to reply and also would like to not have to merge messages.  I use Outlook on a Windows 10 computer.  Thanks for any sage advice.  Messages on my group are not moderated.

locked files,,, needs to open in new window.

In my cat group, we like to compare testing from current to previous (we dont really do spreadsheets).   If I open a file, it takes me away from my group page to the file.  I cant open a second file without opening a NEW groups.io page to my group, and going back into files, and opening a second file.  And if I wanted to open a third and compare it, I have to repeat this whole tedious process.  And nope, I dont want to download all these files to my personal computer to be able to look at them in open windows.

So this could all be solved if the files opened in a new window, or at least the option to do so.  currently, its very frustrating.

locked Re: don't figleaf email addresses in private replies #suggestion

Maria,

Thanks, you're absolutely correct. I never even tested this. I just assumed it would be figleafed in a private response as well. It's not.

This actually solves a lot of the problem that I'd thought was there. If someone wants to send someone else an email address, they can do it in a private response. But I'm still glad that Mark plans to make figleafing optional. I think it would still be useful to be able to post an email address onlist, for all those plumber recommendations.:-)

Hi J

I just tested sending a private reply to another test member and in that reply I included an email address ( plumber example) and in the recipients inbox it was not figleafed.

Where are you seeing emails - that are included in the body of the text -fig-leafed in a private reply?

I can test more if that helps.

locked Earthlink is blocking Groups.io

Hi All,

Earthlink has been blocking us for the last couple of days. I've tried contacting them several times, and their autoresponder keeps telling me that we'll be unblocked within 24 hours. But it's been longer than 48 hours and we're still blocked. I will continue to try to contact them. You may wish to tell your Earthlink users to complain to Earthlink as well. Not sure if that will help, but probably couldn't hurt.

Thanks,
Mark

locked don't figleaf email addresses in private replies #suggestion

This evening someone in a group other than my own asked me for a photo of one of my cats. It happens that the group is one that doesn't allow posting photos. I wanted to ask her for her email address so I could send her a photo (I don't subscribe to the group with individual emails), but realized I would have to explain that she would need to fake it out so that it didn't get hidden by groups.io, etc., and I ended up not bothering.

It dawned to me that if I were to ask that she send me her email address in an offlist (private) response, there would be no real reason for the figleafing. (Of course, I've gone on record saying I don't think there's any legitimate reason to figleaf email addresses anyway, but I don't intend to open that can of worms again...)

This suggestion is that until the figleaf optional setting is implemented, and perhaps even afterwards, email addresses not be figleafed in private responses. I realize the figleaf would probably have to be removed after the person hits the "private" button (I'm not sure at what point in the process the figleafing occurs in the first place), but this would make it easier for people to communicate email addresses to each other (for plumbers, each other, or whoever) without anybody worrying that they reach the archives.

Sorry - what I mean is merge members ( not messages) of one subgroup with another.

As I write this it sounds like just creating a new third group and adding members of group 1 and 2 would be simpler... Just wondering if a bulk operation for that would be interesting?

Maria

locked Merge Subgroups #suggestion

Would it be possible to merge one subgroup in to another?

So rather than creating a third group and adding members of subgroup 1 and 2 to #3 - just merge 1& 2 together to create #3?

locked Include edits to pending messages in the Moderator Activity log #suggestion

Mark,

When a moderator edits a pending message there does not appear to be any log entry of the event. I think there should be.

I'd suggest the same format as the "approved" log entry, except perhaps for the Message # - which wouldn't have been assigned yet (and might never be if the message is ultimately deleted or rejected).

Likewise in the Members' Activity History.

I'll second this.   Sticky posts are used seldom, and are generally for information that's important and doesn't change much or often.  Having these messages keep a prominent place in the various views is common practice, and for good reason.
