This has been fixed and it includes matches on both title and message body. No worries there.

This is one of the reasons I don't use the search function here.

I've started to avoid it for searching beta posts, but unfortunately, there's no other option when group archives are private.

My guess is it's equally frustrating to sophisticated and unsophisticated users. It's just a PITA, period!

And these tons of false positives and false negatives are even more frustrating to unsophisticated (yes, that is the proper term in the software world - and it has nothing to do with general worldliness) users who either haven't a clue that they are getting false positives or missing false negatives or, probably more likely, looking for something they know that they or someone else posted hours to days ago that they cannot get to pull up in a search.

I honestly cannot recall at the moment as to whether searches when in thread view use both the Title/Subject and message text or not.  I seem to recall the first time that I did a search in that view it was only using either the Title/Subject or the message text, but either at the exclusion of the other is not intuitive at all.  I recall being flabbergasted when told that it was either/or.

This is one of the reasons I don't use the search function here.  It's just too darned frustrating and inconsistent in getting back what I'd expect to get back when I know, without a doubt, that the it I'm looking for is out there and where I'm looking.

As an aside and from an aesthetic viewpoint I still think that "merging" the permalink icon with the message number designation would make more sense and cause the message number to stand out as an entity separate from the time.  This, however, is a real nit to pick.

Yes there is! Thank you Duane!

I knew that was there but never put 1+1 together on how I could use that to simplify the url.

I am on a apple products so i rarely right click (control+click) - but will definitely be doing that going forward for this need.

Thank you so much! Much better than listing a message by #.

I played around with having some way of selecting where your reply goes to before the reply box opens up, but was unhappy with everything I tried.

I give this mixed reviews. Of course I'm still unhappy that the user still has to click "reply" before clicking on "private," which is the same problem I lamented before. So I'm unhappy that you were unhappy with all the possible solutions you came up with (I'd love to hear what they were).

But if you're going to stick with this (and I hope not), I think the "private" toggle should be much more obvious. Among the other choices at the bottom, it's the only thing without a color and is extremely inconspicuous. Is that intentional, to make it more difficult to click "reply to sender"? I think it just makes things more difficult in general.

Also, it's a step in the right direction that the subject includes the word "private," but I don't think that's enough. There have been many, many occasions when despite my typing "Offlist - private" into the title, the recipient still has no idea that the message is private because they ignore titles and are reading the message bodies. I myself have fallen victim to this many times. I eventually began each such message with the sentence "This is a private (offlist) reply." People can throw advice at me to be a more careful reader - in fact, I'm anticipating it, LOL - but that doesn't solve the problem. I think the message body itself should also include something at the top.

Bottom line, baby steps in the right direction, but it doesn't solve what for me is the crux of the problem.

At the upper right corner of each message, there is a link button that looks like a short piece of chain. On desktop, you can right click it and "copy link location" (or similar) to get a link to it without all the extra stuff that shows in the address bar. Handy for pointing folks to a specific message instead of just a number. For example, your post shows as https://groups.io/g/beta/message/10136

Mark, Did you deactivate the test-version link? Are those of us who had been on test version now on the live version automatically? The link doesn't work any more. Thanks.

Cool. In Messages view between the author and time seems great.

In Expanded Messages view could they go under the time stamp? In light grey? Or in More...

Hi All,

The new website is now live for everyone. Please let me know if you see any issues.

I never responded to the (massive) thread on preventing Reply to Group/Sender mixups, but I did read everything and have made some changes based on your feedback, which you will see on the site now.

If the group allows it, there's now a toggle button at the bottom right of the reply box. Clicking that button toggles the main reply button on the left. This is similar to how several other services handle this issue, and I think is an improvement over what we had before.

Also, for replies to sender, the word 'Private: ' is prepended to the subject line.

I played around with having some way of selecting where your reply goes to before the reply box opens up, but was unhappy with everything I tried.

Thanks,
Mark

I also think that the message number should not be featured as the "face forward" of a message list.  It has absolutely no relevance to the actual content being conveyed.

I think it would work very well if placed as part of the permalink to a given post in the upper right hand corner.  The current link icon followed by the message number would work perfectly for the purpose.  If that's absolutely offensive to anyone, then at least placing it after the actual Title/Subject, preferably in some clearly demarcated way that makes it separate from the Subject font, would also work.
