I think this is the way to go, with Mark merely providing a sort field for
group owners to fill in the appropriate code. The list offered to searchers
would then only include those headings for which there are one or more entries.
Using this system has the advantage of flexibility without any reprogramming to
add categories, and avoids the nonsense of "re-inventing the wheel". It's been
in use successfully for a very long time, so why not use it? I'm not saying
it's perfect (huge over-emphasis on Christianity compared with alternative
views, for example), but it works and is well-known. Don't be put off by the
length of this list - most of them would probably never be used so would not
clutter the search, but the need to know in advance which ones are needed would
be completely avoided.
