Re: Multiple active welcome messages are allowed

Hi Nina,

Sure, I understand, no problem whatsoever.

Thanks, Christos. Due to the vagaries of email delivery, there is no way to guarantee the order in which multiple notices are delivered.” So I’m hesitant to include the tip you suggest because it might not happen in every case.

Nina,

I don't know if Mark wants to include this in there as a note, but for those who have or want to use multiple welcome notices and want to control the order those are emailed out they can do so by selectively updating/saving those notices, as they are emailed oldest to newest, or same order shown onscreen if you sort on Updated ascending.

To make it look/work right, for online (which is what I mostly do) I use: link space comma/period left-arrow backspace end continue.  Takes a few extra keys, but I think it looks better.  I wish it worked 'normal', but I'm just happy the site exists!  Maybe Mark can fix it one day in his copious spare time. ;>)

The change was made on 20 Sep 21, https://beta.groups.io/g/main/message/30348.

Thanks for letting me know J, turns out edits are allowed.

Well, I guess Thunderbird has spoiled me as it works a bit differently on how it links text...  I composed that message online and not thinking I pasted the link text then continued with the comma and space etc, and apparently the online editor seems to use space as the flag to end the linked text and will include the comma and whatever there is before it.  I guess I should have spaced first, comma, then space again, as I did in the message edit.

Re: Help landing page rework

Christos, that's a bad link. The comma got included and it says "page not found." Might want to delete and resent. Or send an edit if allowed in this subgroup (I haven't checked)

Help landing page rework

Edited

I just noticed the landing page was reworked, https://groups.io/helpcenter , I don't know when that was done as I use bookmarks, but kudos, it looks very neat and efficient now!

Re: Multiple active welcome messages are allowed

I think it was news to everyone.

Re: Multiple active welcome messages are allowed

I updated the Owners Manual to mention that the Welcome notice type (and Monthly Reminder notice type, as Mark confirmed in beta) can have multiple active messages. For the record, that was news to me, too. :-)

Thanks,
Nina

This was something completely unknown to me, and in fact, the documentation currently states there can be only one active notice of any type at a given time. I'm querying Mark as to whether you can have multiple actives for other notice types as well, or just for the welcome. It was sure news to me.

The Owners Manual now contains an About Groups.io billing topic (near the end, before the Additional information topic).

Thanks, Andy. I follow the beta group and saw Mark's response, and I already made a note to myself to add it to the documentation. :-)

Hi Nina,

Hope you're enjoying your travels.  When you get back (and have recovered ;>), I have a couple of additions that may be useful.

1.  I don't see an explanation/example of the Moderator Edited badge on the Pending Messages page.  This only shows up if a moderator edits a message and Saves without approving.  In this situation, there's also an Undo button added to the status line next to the badges.  Probably best added to the section on "Handling pending messages" of the manual.

2.  The addition of an explanation of the "User status" in the "Downloading your group’s member list" as noted in https://beta.groups.io/g/main/message/30121

I had a great trip, thanks!

The Moderator Edited badge is now documented in the Owners Manual and Members Manual (under Additional information > Member badges and topic icons > Topic icons). While I was at it, I added the Claimed by badge, which I suddenly realized was not included in the list (I also added that badge to the list of member badges because it can show up for pending members).

I'll work on documenting the Undo button and the User status column in downloaded member lists for a future doc release. I didn't have time to get to those this week.

Thank you for the suggestions.

Re: For the glossary #suggestion

Nina E

Can you please add "hamburger menu" to the glossary?

Because "hamburger menu" (or icon or button) is a general term, and I prefer to keep the Groups.io glossary focused on terms that specific to Groups.io, I added links to a definition in Wikipedia to the the "hamburger" references in the Members Manual and Owners Manual.

Thank you for the suggestion.

The Special badge is now documented in the Owners Manual and Members Manual (under Additional information > Member badges and topic icons > Topic icons).

Thanks for the suggestion.

To be honest, I think they're the same thing, based on Mark's comments in various topics.  Also, based on the fact that system-banned members are removed from all groups, along with the change he made in https://beta.groups.io/g/main/message/30096,  I don't believe we'll ever see a member record set to 2 (inactive).  In addition, although Mark's comment said "permanently disabled by me", we've seen that's not necessarily so in another topic, https://beta.groups.io/g/main/message/30103.

However... if Mark sets a User Status to Inactive there is no corresponding badge in the Members List; the only way an owner / moderator could check this status is by downloading the Member List and examining it. I suggest a badge should be added to cover this status.

In addition there is nothing in either Manual about Banned by System and IMHO there really ought to be.

I am unclear about the difference in purpose for setting a User Status to Inactive and a system - instigated Ban, given that their effects are not greatly different. Can this be clarified in any way?

Chris
