Good catch, Bruce. I’ll correct it in the next update of the manual.

Thanks!

Ronaldo,

I also think this behaviour should be modified/enhanced but this is the docs group, we should discuss this in GMF or beta instead.

Cheers,
Christos

EXCUSE ME ?!

That simply should not happen. It shouldn't be up to the moderator of one group to decide at which email-address a member/subscriber receives messages of another group. If this is the way it is, it should be changed.

Re: Poll Results

Thanks for the feedback, Bruce. I added a topic to the Members Manual on viewing poll results and mentioned the Edit Archives permission for moderators where applicable. Mark has published the updated documentation to the Help Center.

Hi, Christos. I confess I was unaware of this myself (!). I added a note to the Owners Manual, and Mark has published the update to the Help Center. Mark also added a note under the Email field on the individual member page.

Thank you for the feedback!

Hi Nina,

I would suggest to add a warning/note/blurb in that owner's manual section to the effect of "if a mod changes the email address in a group, the change affects all groups that member is subscribed to"

This is not documented anywhere (that I know of), and while many of the seasoned admins know it, apparently there are other owners/admins/mods out there (me included) who thought that when a mod changes a member's address in one group, the change took effect only for that group; in other words, similar to what the user would do if they wanted to do the same (change their address only for one group), by unsubscribing from the group, creating a new GIO account with the new address, and resubscribing with the new account to the group, the difference being if the user did it they would lose message ownership, join date, and such group membership info, whereas if a mod did it for the user within that group, GIO would "move" just that group's membership to the new account, in effect doing the same thing the user would have accomplished themselves but the message ownership and the like would be preserved in this case.

Hopefully this should make clear any unintended consequences/side effects of a mod changing the address.

See this thread for more info if needed: https://groups.io/g/Group_Help/topic/changing_a_group_io_member/77027138

Cheers,
Christos

And to ask for and store it when it isn't necessary would probably be in breach of the (European) GDPR and possibly other Data Protection Regulations.

The place to enter credit card information is at https://groups.io/updatecc. And your email address was provided when your account was established.

I have never been asked for my address or phone, but did have to enter my ZIP code. I don't understand your insistence on providing groups.io with information that they don't need.

Please post that page link, is not in any documentation on the company site.  After 3 days ZERO response from same questions to support@groups.io .
Are you wanting a change in the groups.io documentation? This is, after all, the docs subgroup.

I don't think I'm alone in not understanding your question.  The site info is at https://groups.io/static/tos or can be reached from there using the left menu.  Your account info is all at https://groups.io/account and the left menu of that page.

I added a note about logging in with an email alias to the information about adding email aliases in the Members Manual > Understanding Groups.io accounts > Setting account preferences and viewing account information > Setting or changing account login elements (section 3.4.2 in the PDF version).

I think you are confusing the issue when you start talking about logging in with an alias because you don't do that. You just define an alternate address as an alias to the account address. In fact the alias address cannot already have an account defined with Groups.io.

If you have an alias defined for your account, you can log in using that email address, just as you would with your `primary` email address. The end result is the same, you're logged into your (singular) account.

Thanks,

Mark

User Account Alias text addition suggestion

Christos G. Psarras

Hi Nina,

I'd suggest to add a note blurb in the member user account alias section (member PDF, 3.4.2, "Setting or changing account login elements"), to include some blurb to the effect of "using an alias email address to log in into GIO (with the same pwd as the main email address) is the same as logging in as the main email address" or something to that effect.

What brought this up was this topic in beta: "Linking email addresses #suggestion", https://beta.groups.io/g/main/topic/76845259

Not quite sure if there should also be something to that effect somewhere in the Owner manual.

Cheers,
Christos

Re: mysterious “Your email is hosted by Gmail” note

I think this is more a question for the GMF group, but basically groups.io is modifying the look of your email address to account for something called DMARC, which is a technical issue affecting gmail and yahoo mail (and possibly some others - I'm not sure). So no, it's not just gmail.

You are receiving an email back for the emails you send because you have your account set to "always receive copies of my own emails." It has nothing to do with the DMARC problem or the munging of your email. You can turn that setting off, but your email address will still be munged because of DMARC.

mysterious “Your email is hosted by Gmail” note

Hannah Pascal

Hi docs group :)

In account settings under my email there’s a notice

Note: Your email is hosted by Gmail, so we will rewrite the From line for the copies of your group messages that we send back to you.

However the “learn more” link, or anything else I could find, explains *why* this is happening.
At the moment every email I send to a group triggers an immediate email back with the same content but from “hannah via groups.io” which I assume this note refers to.
Why is that? Is it some privacy setting that hides my true email? Why is it only for GMail? Is it a workaround for a GMail bug? Could I instead turn these echo emails off and avoid this rewrite issue altogether?

Thanks!
